As of October 20, 2014, Mr. Sanjeev “Sonny” Bhagowalia serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Information Systems and Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury overseeing a $ 3.5 Billion IT Portfolio.
Mr. Bhagowalia served in the State of Hawaii Government from 2011-2014 reporting directly to the Governor. As the Governor’s Chief Advisor on Technology and Cybersecurity, Mr. Bhagowalia published a comprehensive plan aligning Hawaii with the President’s National Cybersecurity Framework. As State’s First CIO, Mr. Bhagowalia led the business and technology transformation for the State, with a comprehensive plan and Top 10 enterprise programs. Mr. Bhagowalia’s transformation efforts garnered 25 national awards.
Mr. Bhagowalia served as Deputy Associate Administrator, U.S. General Services Administration from 2010-2011, helping the Federal CIO and CTO implement Digital Government Programs (Data.gov, FedRAMP.gov, Federal Cloud Initiative, Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative) in an agile manner with Government-wide impact.
Mr. Bhagowalia served in the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) from 2007-2010. As DOI CIO, he oversaw a $ 1 Billion IT Portfolio and modernized/unified the DOI’s diverse IT environment under its top-rated Enterprise Architecture Program. As Bureau of Indian Affairs CIO, he led the historic Reconnection to the Internet after the multi-Billion Dollar Cobell Lawsuit and transformed the CIO program to better serve 562 Tribes across the USA.
Mr. Bhagowalia served in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (U.S. Department of Justice) from 1999-2007 as the IT Program Management Executive (Assistant Director) overseeing and modernizing a $ 1 B IT portfolio.
Mr. Bhagowalia worked for Boeing, a Fortune 30 company from 1985-1999 as a Chief Engineer/Manager and Senior Principal Engineer in the prestigious Boeing Technical Excellence Fellowship Program in support of U.S. Government clients - Civilian (Ten Years at NASA), Defense & Intelligence Community.
Mr. Bhagowalia served as a member of the Federal CIO Council Executive Committee, co-chairing its Architecture/Infrastructure and Best Practices Committees; and co-chaired the Inter-Agency Management Council for the $ 1.2 Billion GSA “NETWORX” program.
Mr. Bhagowalia has MS and BS degrees in Electrical Engineering from LSU; a MS in IRM from Syracuse University; and a Federal CIO Certificate and IRM Diploma from the National Defense University (Twice Distinguished Graduate). Mr. Bhagowalia has won numerous awards for his work from the Federal/State Government and Industry, including the prestigious Presidential Rank Award and three “Fed 100” Awards.
