The IT Modernization Division
The IT Modernization Division, within GSA’s Office of Government-wide Policy Office of Technology Policy, provides CFO Act agencies with support and guidance for cloud strategy, datacenter optimization and modernizing their technology stack. We also support initiatives that strive to modernize IT infrastructure for small agencies, save money, and improve the federal government’s cybersecurity posture.
What We Do
We are knowledge brokers who:
- Manage the Cloud & Infrastructure Community of Practice (C&I CoP), providing a forum for agencies to discuss cloud and data center implementation and optimization.
- Manage various subcommunities of practice, including the Agile, IPv6, IT Sustainability, Low Code No Code and Workforce Development subcommunities. Federal employees and mission-supporting contractors are able to connect and share best practices, challenges, use cases, and other insights to a government wide audience.
- Publish educational artifacts on topics such as application rationalization, containerization, cloud operations, and zero trust.
Federal Data Centers
- We support OMB with new and existing data
- We offer resources to help agencies identify best practices for managing their cloud operations and modernizing their IT infrastructure.
- We help agencies leverage colocation data centers by using new organizational and communication strategies and aligning resources for these strategies.
Workforce Development
- We provide no-cost training to federal employees looking to gain fundamental knowledge in areas such as cloud operations, networking, security and compliance, and cloud service providers.
- Our course offerings come from both large and small organizations focusing on topics such as: AWS, Azure, Cisco, CompTIA Sec+, CompTIA Cloud+, CISSP, IPv6.
- We offer CPE credits for all of our courses
Federal Policy Support
In partnership with the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the IT Modernization Division is responsible for:
- Providing agencies with relevant guidance and legislation to support the IT modernization goals of their agency and mission.
Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6)
- GSA serves as the Program Manager of the Federal IPv6 Task Force as found in OMB’s Memorandum M-21-07 [PDF].
- The Federal IPv6 Task Force hosts bi-monthly interagency meetings for IPv6 implementation managers to discuss current challenges and best practices during their transition to IPv6-only networks.
IT Standards Policy
- GSA’s Office of Technology Policy (OTP) serves the role of Standards Executive within the Interagency Committee on Standards Policy (ICSP). The committee advises the Secretary of Commerce and heads of other federal agencies in matters relating to the implementation of OMB A-119, and reports to the Secretary of Commerce through the Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
